Philosophy.

Motu means island, or region.

The Motu Design team are passionate about finding urban solutions specific to the context of Aotearoa New Zealand that reflect our unique mix of cultures and respect our valued landscapes and heritage.

We respect and value the Tiriti o Waitangi and tikanga Maori.

Work.

Our work starts with a thorough understanding of a site, its local context, and its constraints and opportunities, including existing and future potential. This includes respecting the past, restoring ecology, addressing climate change issues, responding to local character and the changing needs of our clients and communities, to more effectively manage growth and change.

Focus.

Our focus is on the creation of places that support the Mauri (life and health) of our people and environments, both now and for future generations. We aim to ensure growth, change and urban intensification is managed in way that also complements and enhances other factors, such as the mana of tangata whenua, the quality of our public realm and waterways, the efficiency of our transport and economic networks, community aspirations and infrastructure requirements.

Research.

We embrace opportunities to be innovative, communicate new ways of thinking and explore how we might improve the urban design and development of our cities. This includes ongoing professional development, training, research projects, teaching and presentations.

Method.

Our method is holistic, and founded on understanding and respecting relationships, and the diversity of cultural values and environmental contexts within which our communities live. This includes respect for the various professions, and the interaction of design, planning and community processes (that include governance and politics as well as direct community engagement).

Practice.

Our practice reflects our values, experiences, research and ongoing professional development. We actively look to grow and improve our own design practice, and to share our expertise with others through research, teaching, presentations, advocacy, upskilling, projects and collaboration, exploring new ways to explain what we do, what we value, and why is important to us.
