Design Statements

Design Statements document the rationale behind the design of a proposed development.  They provide an analysis of the site and its context, identifying key constraints and opportunities that have informed the design response. They also illustrate how and why a design proposal will provide a positive contribution to the local area, with the potential for adverse effects being avoided or mitigated.   They are a useful design and communication tool to assist with the assessment of developments and are recognized as being a best practice process both in New Zealand and overseas.

Motu Design were commissioned by Auckland Council’s Auckland Design Office to collaborate with them in providing Expert Urban Design Evidence in support of Design Statements as an information requirement in the Auckland Unitary Plan.   This included advise on the re-drafting of the provisions for greater clarity and ease of use, and responding to specific submissions.
